The current state of our weather here in New York City has me pining for my days in San Diego, where 50 degrees was considered sweatshirt and beanie weather. This past Monday, however, we were fortune enough to have beautiful sunshine, warm temperatures, and bursts of color from budding trees. It was perfect timing because as luck would have it, it was also the day Kathlyn, Tom and I had our make up date for their new york city engagement photos.
Kathlyn and Tom chose Carl Shurz Park  for their engagement photos because of its significance –  they frequented the park after many dates, taking long walks around the secluded area, talking about their life and future. It is also the place Tom proposed to Kathlyn not too long ago.  Carl Shurz Park is located on 86th and East End, about two blocks from my studio – and not that I mind traveling around the city for engagement photos, but there’s something great about being on my home turf and knowing the best spots for photos!

Kathlyn and Tom are so natural in front of the camera. You can see it in the way they interact, laugh, and connect – none of which are things you can coach or teach. They showed me the spot where Tom proposed, a concealed park bench surrounded by greenery. We made our way over to the river where one of my favorite trees had bloomed – a beautiful white cherry blossom – and grabbed a few of my favorite images from the session there. The unfortunate side of a beautiful day in New York City, especially after the winter we’ve had, is that EVERYONE takes advantage of it. After a few attempts to photograph them amongst the crowd failed, we decided to head back into the park.

On Kathlyn and Tom’s many dates that ended with a walk in Carl Shurz Park, they would often enjoy Two Little Red Hens cupcakes. For those of you who don’t know about Two Little Red Hens, do yourself a favor and check them out. Jackie and my favorites are the peanut butter and chocolate but we’ve yet to try anything from there that we don’t like. The session ended with a first for me – a messy cupcake smash! Having been on the receiving end of a food fight, I was excited to be able to stay clean while still enjoying the excitement and messiness. Kathlyn and Tom decided on red velvet cupcakes with vanilla icing, Kathlyn’s being slightly larger than Tom’s (poor guy).

I had a blast capturing Kathlyn and Tom’s new york city engagement photos – I can’t wait for the wedding!
